One of the oldest and most beloved titles in the Literature to Life roster, Sandra Cisneros’ The House on MangoStreet is a beautifully written, poetic, account of a young girl, Esperanza, growing up in poor neighborhoods in Chicago, where her family is always moving from house to house. Through a series of vignettes a picture of a neighborhood emerges, through the eyes of Esperanza, who will later become a writer. I adapted The House on MangoStreet in 1993; it has been in repertory ever since, with a succession of three wonderful actresses playing Esperanza: Josefina Bosch, Lidia Ramirez (with whom I also created her solo show: I Love America), and currently Ana Maria Jomolco, who also plays Edgar Allan Poe in our Tell Tale Heart and other PoeTry.
